You don't have to travel to Italy for delicious authentic gelato. Make it in the comfort of your own home with the new Gelato Maker from DeLonghi. Gelato is a dense mixture with lower fat than ice cream and no added air, which is more rich and flavorful. And with the self-refrigerating compressor, you don't have to wait for your favorite sweet treat. Built-in compressor brings the ingredients to temperatures below freezing, which frozen bowl ice cream makers cannot do. Make multiple batches continuously instead of having to wait to re-freeze the ice cream bowl. The removable stainless steel bowl makes for easy serving and cleanup and the mixing paddle effectively mixes ingredients from top to bottom for perfect consistency. Other highlights include an eco-friendly refrigerant gas that doesn't deplete the ozone layer, transparent lid and recipe book.
The GM6000 is an efficient and elegant machine for producing really good gelato. Preparation of ingredients is easy (no cookiing custard base, like in older ice-cream machines) and cleanup is a snap. The removable bowl, rotor and lid clean easily and without aggravation. The gelato produced is first-rate. After receiving the machine, I immediately made a coffee gelato and have since made several batches of raspberry gelao with fresh berries - all excellent.
The GM6000 operates relatively quietly (sounds like a quiet dishwasher heard from another room). It looks good on the counter: clean industrial design.
One source of frustration is the genuinely terrible documentation DeLonghi sends with the machine. I could not find anywhere in the documentation where it actually says the size of the mixing bowl. It measured at a maximum 28 fluid ounces, usable maximum (considering gelato's expansion) at about 22 fluid ounces. In addition, the sparse English-language documentation seems directed at a UK readership - the problem there is that UK uses Imperial measurements: an Imperial pint is 20, not 16, ounceas.
The recipe book that comes with the machine says that it is designed for a 40 ounce bowl, and to reduce the amounts proportionately for smaller bowls. DON'T DO IT! The recipes work just fine as is for the GM6000, even though it clearly has a bowl much smaller than 40 ounces.
I would have been happier with documentation that had accurate specifications of the machine, and, if this review were on the documentation it would rate one star or less. The machine rates the full five stars, however, and the recipes work, even though they're apparently not supposed to.
The map is not the territory, and the word is not the thing. In this case, the word's pretty awful, but the thing itself is great.
If you like excellent ice cream or gelato, you are going to love this machine. It's not really noisy and it cleans up in minutes. The best part is gelato doesn't have all of the whipped in air and lots and lots of cream and egg yolks that ice cream has in it - this means it's lower in calories and tastes better. It's hard to find tastes better - lower calories. If you can afford it buy it.
